It was so full of tiny spots, having no city lights to seize its greatness. And we drank Moroccan tea under the clear sky.įor the first time, I saw a sky full of stars. We arrived at a desert camp, some tents and carpets laid on the sand, and the Berbers made dinner for us and set up a fire and played some traditional music using a few Tbilat (it looks like a drum) and Krakebs (a large iron castanet-like musical instrument).
It started from this house which was literally at the beginning of the desert and from there we jumped on a camel and it was a nice 1-hour camel trek at sunset, in the desert. A Camel trek in Merzouga Desertĭefinitely, my favourite moment from Morocco was the trip in the desert.Īlthough this is a very popular tourist attraction there, and many tour guides and agencies have it among their offerings, it is such a beautiful experience. Mighty peaks, winding roads, rocky cliffs and red soil. The Atlas Mountains are bordering the dry desert. A colourful, fish abundant city is a perfect 1 day trip from Marrakesh. The waves of the Atlantic ocean touch the shore of Morocco, and one great place to visit and admire the ocean is Essaouira. All trips were planned before getting there, so that made everything easier. The locals “offering” to help you, will leave you alone if you are in a group. Either way, I believe it’s the best way to explore more than 1 city, to get insights and tips about places. Tour agenciesĪ lot of tourists go there with a group or search for local agencies to tour the country. This is a Muslim country and at your first contact, it can come as a shock. Especially at night and if you are a woman. Scammers are everywhere.Ī lot of blogs and my guide there was saying to not travel alone and too far from the crowded streets. It can be exhausting and annoying, especially if you travel alone.īeware of your surroundings always, don’t wear valuable jewellery, leave your passport at your hotel, take care where you exchange money. And some others will try to convince you to eat at a certain restaurant or street food stall.
If you’re a tourist, they will notice you. Everywhere on the streets were people trying to convince you to book a 1-day trip from their agency. Also, locals are trying to take advantage of this flood of tourists. Morocco is used to tourists, and the bigger cities have a lot to offer. It is an attraction that is a unique experience, and with such a large supply of roses, it is no wonder that this region is said to be the best smelling destination in Morocco.Safety and measures of caution come first. During the festival, a Rose Queen is crowned, who will reign over the successful harvest of fragrance. To celebrate the wealth and success of the harvest, the Dades Valley hosts the annual Rose Festival.Įl Kelaa M’Gouna is the only settlement in the area, and is home to the two massive rose water factories of the region. Visitors to the festival will therefore see tons of rose petals being transported to the factories to extract the precious oils, leaving a trail of rose scent lingering in the air.Ī massive market, known as a souk, is opened in the town of El Kelaa M’Gouna where tourists will find various fascinating items being sold, and musicians and dancers livening up the festival spirit. Their beauty and subtle aromas fill the air, and to farmers in the area, harvesting the petals of these delicate, yet perfect, crops is done with love and not seen as hard labor. The Dades Valley in Morocco is also known as the Valley of the Roses, as it is here where the fragrant rose oil and rose water is produced for the country, and the landscapes are a sea of pink Persian roses. The Rose Festivalis a magical event that usually takes place at the beginning of May every year and has become a favorite attraction and festival for tourists to attend.
